What is Restorative Dental Care?

Any procedure with the goal of restoring your smile's normal function and appearance is considered restorative dental care.

Our dentists at Battlefords Dental Centre can help restore your smile - and your oral health - by correcting or repairing structural issues such as missing or damaged teeth.

Depending on your problem, our dentists will determine the right restorative treatment option for you, and fully explain the procedure and any implications.

Dental Fillings

A dental filling can help to restore a decayed or damaged tooth. During your regular dental appointments, your dentist will examine your teeth for any signs of cavities.

If you need a filling, your dentist will remove the decayed tooth material before cleaning the affected area. The area is then filled with a tooth-coloured composite resin or silver amalgam filling.

Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays are indirect dental fillings created outside the mouth, then used to fill a cavity typically located in a molar or pre-molar.

Inlays fill space between cusps in the middle of the tooth, while onlays cover one or more cusps or the entire surface of the tooth.

Root Canals

Blood vessels, tissues and nerves inside a tooth can become infected with disease and need to be removed with a root canal.

By removing bacteria and decay, your dentist can help stop infection from spreading and avoid an extraction. Your dentist completes the procedure by placing a filling or crown to protect the area.

A root canal is typically the best option for repairing a tooth once infection reaches the pulp at its centre, as an unnecessary extraction can lead to complex dental problems that can be time-consuming and costly to solve.

For example, existing teeth may become misaligned if surrounding teeth drift into the gap. In other cases, deteriorating jaw bone can lead to facial collapse.

Periodontal (Gum) Therapy

Gum disease infects the mouth's tissues, including gingiva, gums, cementum, alveolar bone, and periodontal ligament. Provided the disease is detected early, our dentists at Battlefords Dental Centre will recommend non-surgical preventive therapy.

Otherwise, the severity and type of disease will determine treatment methods. A combination of scaling and root planing may be needed to treat this condition.

Early detection and treatment of gum disease is the key to preventing the development of more severe dental health issues.

Dentures

Dentures are artificial teeth used to replace one missing tooth, several in a row (partial dentures), or a whole jaw of missing teeth (full dentures). Implant-supported dentures are held in place with a titanium screw.

Each type of dentures allows patients with missing teeth to maintain their facial structure, and to talk and eat properly. Conventional dentures can be removed for sleeping or eating.

We can assess whether you may be a candidate for full, partial, or implant-supported dentures, and provide a referral to a denturist.
